Files List Window

This discusses how to use the Files List Window. Before the detailed usage of the window, we will show a list of things you can do in it.

To find out what a FILES LIST is, click here.

The Files List Window is broken into 2 parts. The TOP part is the actual list of filenames in the Files List. The bottom part of the screen has all the buttons on it to do the cool stuff mentioned above.

BASIC OPERATION

Just click on a file in the list and it will be displayed. If it's a movie or sound file, then a panel of buttons will appear that allow you to play, pause, stop, etc... the sound/movie file. If you double click on a file or press return while a single file is HI-LITED, or double click in the preview area, then that brings up a LARGE PREVIEW. You can have MANY LARGE PREVIEWS opened up at once to possibly compare pictures. To see what you can do with LARGE PREVIEWS, click here.

You can DRAG to & from the Files List Window to/from where ever you want.

You can TAG files so that you can do operations on the tagged files. Here are the things you can do with the tagged files.

You can also switch between the DETAILed file view and a THUMBnail file view mode. The thumbnail mode shows you the actual images as a bunch of tiny images.

If the file you are looking at is an animated GIF file, then click on the CAMERA button to PLAY the GIF animation.

If you click in the FILENAME column while in DETAIL VIEW, AND the file you are clicking on is already HI-LITED, then a RENAME window will pop-up so that you can rename the file.

When you MOVE/COPY tagged files, TurboView keeps track of the most recent folders you had selected. This makes it EASIER to go back to those same folders without having to browse again. It keeps track of the most recent 15 folders you used AND sorts the list by which was used last.

TAGGING FILES

In order to TAG files, just click IN the little BOX next to the filename. You can also press the SPACE-BAR to tag the file from the keyboard. If you have LOTS of files to tag then this method could take some time:)  In order to speed up this process, we have another method. Just HI-LITE a bunch of files using the CTRL & SHIFT keys and then click on the "TAG HI-LITED" button. For details on using the standard CTRL & SHIFT keys for selecting, click here.

ADVANCED OPERATIONS

You can search the FILES LIST for specific filenames or specific partial filenames. For example: You can search for "PAM" and it would find "Pamela001.JPG" and "SPAM.gif". You can also search for DUPlicate files that match on size & date. If files match on size & date then it's a 90% chance that the files are the SAME :) You can also search for duplicate filenames. The searching capabilities are very good. For more details on SEARCHING, Click Here.

You can also elect to ADD files to the FILES LIST by clicking on the "ADD" button.

In order to SORT the FILES LIST by various columns, just click on the column header. If you click on the SAME column header TWICE in a row, then the column is sorted in REVERSE order.

You can edit the info in next to the DB EDIT button to change the info in the DataBase for that file. If you click the DB EDIT button, then all fields in the DataBase can be edited. In fact, while in the DB EDIT function, you can set all tagged files to have the same value for a specific field in the DataBase. You can also indicate which field in the DataBase should appear in the DB FIELD in the File List window.

You can also change the SIZE of the thumbs. There are many different sizes to pick from. They range from very small to very large.

You can also change the viewing mode to "TALL". In this mode, the bottom half of the Files List Window will go away. This way you can view MORE FILES at once. This TALL mode also works while in THUMB VIEW mode.

You can also change the column headers around. Just DRAG the column header to where you want it and then let go of the mouse button. This is useful if you want to change the order of the columns.

You can PRINT or SAVE catalog page(s) of thumbnails. You can take all the tagged files and fit their thumbnails onto a printed page. You can control how many ROWS are on the page. You can also SAVE these page(s) as JPG or BMP files.

There is also a Web Page Creation button you can click to AUTOMATICALLY generate Web Page(s) based on the current files in the Files List. This is EASIER than manually inserting a bunch of links into HTML page code. The Web Page Creation WIZARD also generates ALL the thumbnails needed too. For more info on the Web Wizard, click here.

There is also a FTP button you can click on to bring up the FTP program so that you can upload/download files from an FTP server site. You can have many FTP SITE Profiles remembered so that you can log into them easily without having to re-type the server location etc...

THUMBNAIL OPERATIONS

While viewing the FILES LIST in detailed mode, the background creation of the thumbnails are put on hold. When you switch back to thumbnail mode, the background creation continues. There is a colored button next to the THUMB VIEW button. If it's RED then the thumbnail creation is on HOLD. If it's yellow, then the thumbs are being made. If it's GREEN then all the thumbs are done being made.

If the making of the thumbs is slowing your system down too much, you can put them on hold by clicking on the colored button and changing it to RED. Later you can click on it again to change it to YELLOW. This will START the making of the thumbs again.

FILES LIST

You will find many references to FILES LIST in this help documentation. The FILES LIST is basically a list of filenames that TurboView keeps track of. Most programs load a single file and display it. Then if you want to display another picture, you have to go and load another file. This would be quite tedious if you have a lot of files you want to look at. So TurboView is designed to hold a LOT of filenames into a big list. Of course you can have just one filename in the list if you want. But TurboView's real power comes when you load a lot of files into the files list and then do advanced functions with them like sorting and converting and searching etc...

Once you have loaded the files list with a lot of files, they are sorted by the default sort method which is usually by FILENAME. If you go into the Files List Window and click on a column header other than FILENAME, then that will become the default sort method. Every file in the files list is shown in the scrollable Files List Window.
